Before Manchester United
Docherty had been a combative Scottish international midfielder, playing for clubs including Preston North End, Arsenal and Chelsea. His playing personality carried into management: sharp, outspoken and restless.
Before United he managed Chelsea, Rotherham United, Queens Park Rangers, Aston Villa, Porto and Scotland. That varied background gave him experience of pressure, dressing-room conflict and rapid rebuilds, all of which United needed after the O'Farrell decline.
Why He Was Appointed
United needed a forceful personality after O'Farrell. Docherty had charisma and a willingness to make hard decisions, which appealed to a club that needed a jolt.
The Tenure
Docherty could not prevent relegation in 1974, but he rebuilt quickly and won promotion back to the First Division. His United side became quicker, younger and more exciting, culminating in the 1977 FA Cup final win over Liverpool.
Pressure Points
The football pressure was intense because relegation was humiliating for a club of United's size. Docherty also had to move on older players and change the mood. His biggest issue, however, became personal rather than tactical: his relationship with Mary Brown, wife of the club physiotherapist.
Exit And Legacy
United sacked Docherty shortly after the 1977 FA Cup win because of that affair. His legacy is complicated: he revived the team on the pitch, but his exit turned a trophy-winning moment into scandal.
Players Brought In
Docherty rebuilt aggressively after relegation. He moved United toward a younger, quicker side and brought in players who could handle Second Division football before growing into a more exciting top-flight team.
Important arrivals included Lou Macari, Gordon Hill, Stewart Houston, Alex Forsyth and others who became part of the side that won promotion and then the 1977 FA Cup. Docherty's recruitment gave United energy after the post-Busby drift.
