Dave Sexton's Manchester United History

Dave Sexton was chosen as the calmer successor to Tommy Docherty. He brought tactical seriousness and professionalism, but supporters often found his United side too cautious for the club's attacking traditions.

Before Manchester United

Sexton had a modest playing career but became highly respected as a coach. His reputation was built through thoughtful work at Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers, where he produced technically strong, well-organised sides.

At QPR he came close to winning the First Division, which made him attractive to United after Docherty. The board wanted a serious, stable football man after the scandal of Docherty's exit.

Why He Was Appointed

After Docherty's scandal, United wanted stability and dignity. Sexton had a strong coaching reputation from Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers and was seen as a manager who could organise a talented squad.

The Tenure

Sexton's United were competitive but rarely convincing enough to win major honours. They reached the 1979 FA Cup final, losing dramatically to Arsenal, and produced strong runs of form, but the team did not become a title-winning machine.

Pressure Points

The issue was style as much as results. United fans wanted adventure, and Sexton's more methodical football felt restrained. He also had to manage a club still measuring every manager against Busby's attacking ideal.

Exit And Legacy

He was sacked in 1981 despite ending with a run of victories. His legacy is of a capable coach whose careful approach never fully matched what Old Trafford wanted emotionally.

Players Brought In

Sexton's best-known signings included Joe Jordan and Gordon McQueen from Leeds United, both major statements at the time. He also brought in Ray Wilkins, a technically gifted midfielder who became central to United after Sexton left.

The recruitment had quality, but the team often felt more controlled than explosive. Sexton assembled good footballers, yet never quite found the attacking blend supporters expected.

Record At A Glance

Across the recorded Manchester United matches, Dave Sexton finished with 81 wins, 64 draws and 56 defeats. The goal record was 290 scored and 240 conceded, a goal difference of 50.
