Profile

Roger Byrne was captain of the Busby Babes and one of the key reasons that such a young side could play with authority. He came through United, began in a more advanced role and developed into a full-back of unusual calm and consistency.

Byrne's positional change is important. Moving from winger to full-back gave him an attacking understanding that helped him use the ball better than a purely defensive player might. He could defend, but he could also support play sensibly and give United balance from the back.

As captain, he supplied maturity to a side that was young by design. The Babes needed leadership that did not suffocate their freedom, and Byrne offered that blend. He was steady, tactically aware and respected enough to guide players who were developing quickly under Busby.

He was also an England international, which underlines the level he had reached before Munich. Like Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor, he was not simply a promising club player. He was already operating at a national level and forming part of England's future as well as United's.

Byrne died in the Munich air disaster at 28, leaving no late-career chapter. His United legacy is therefore built on leadership, quality and the authority he gave the Babes. He remains one of the club's defining captains, even though his captaincy was denied the years it should have had.
