Profile

Denis Law reached United after Huddersfield Town, Manchester City and Torino, so he was not a local youth myth but a proven forward with a fierce competitive edge. Matt Busby signed a striker who played as if every loose ball in the penalty area belonged to him.

Law's game was explosive and awkward for defenders. He attacked crosses, gambled early, finished quickly and competed with a physical confidence that made him more than a poacher. In the trinity with Bobby Charlton and George Best, Law supplied the penalty-box bite: the player most likely to turn pressure into goals from imperfect service.

His peak brought league titles, European recognition and the 1964 Ballon d'Or. Injuries were part of the story too, including knee problems that affected his later years and limited his role around the 1968 European Cup final. That absence from the final sometimes hides how central he had been to the side that reached that level.

Law left United in 1973 and rejoined Manchester City, a move remembered through the symbolism of United's decline as much as the transfer itself. His United legacy should be read earlier than that ending: one of the club's greatest forwards, and the sharpest finisher in one of its most famous attacking groups.
